I had an awesome and inspiring weekend at a local RWA writers workshop. It was such fun, that I've been poking around the RWA chapter sites this evening, and I stumbled upon this goodie.

It's a radio interview about writing across genre lines with such notables as Mary Jo Putney and Agent Kristen Nelson. It's long, about 2 hours, and I've really only scratched the surface, but what a fabulous thing to listen to while working on laundry.

How fun! What did you do at the workshop?

It was a workshop by an acquisitions agent on proposal packages (query letter, synopsis and first three chapters.) We did a great exercise on writing a "hot premise" (a one sentence description of the novel, kind like a TV guide listing) and then a few brave souls shared what they'd written and the presenter showed easy ways to punch them up. Fascinating stuff.

It was also really nice to network with romance writers. It's a different community from the sf crowd, and in some ways it is easier to talk about my work when I don't feel like I should be apologizing for writing romance.

I know what you mean. It's unfortunate how some folks in the sf community get all upset about not being taken by the mainstream and lit fic people, vociferously stating how it's about _quality_, not genre, but then turn around and roll their eyes at romance.

You are going Potlatch, though, right?

Well, I'll certainly beat up anyone who puts down romance for you. That should help!

You, my dear, are too fast on the draw ;) I could have sworn I deleted that reply before anyone could see it...

My e-mail client squirrelled it away for me. :)

Oh, actually no. I was responding to your comment below. Now I'm dying to know what that original comment was. Come on, e-mail it to me privately!

I'm totally going to Potlatch--wouldn't miss it. Just 'cause I need a romance fix now and again doesn't mean I don't enjoy sf. I think I'm learning to appreciate and respect what I write, too. I may be neither fish nor fowl, but that's okay. So I'm hoping to be a little less self-conscience at sf gatherings.
